The hub uses Home Assistant, which is open-source and runs locally. If your internet drops, the smart home keeps working.

Do I have to throw out my existing smart devices?

Usually not. Home Assistant integrates with hundreds of brands — Philips Hue, Ecobee, certain Ring cameras, smart TVs, and most Zigbee or Z-Wave devices. Some cloud-locked devices (like older Nest cameras) can't be brought local, and I'll tell you which during the assessment. For new devices, I recommend Zigbee — fully local, no account required.

Can it really run a voice assistant without the cloud?

Yes. The system uses Wyoming (the voice protocol), Whisper (speech-to-text), and Piper (text-to-speech) all running on the hub. On the Private Home and Fort Knox tiers, a local LLM via Ollama handles natural-language commands. It's not quite as fast as Alexa for trivia, but for home control it's typically faster — because there's no round-trip to a server.

What if I want to control things when I'm not home?

The Private Home and Fort Knox packages include Tailscale, which creates a private network between your phone and your home hub. You get remote access without exposing your home to the internet. No port forwarding, no third-party cloud — just an encrypted tunnel directly to your house.

How long does installation take?

A Safe & Smart package usually takes 3–4 hours on-site after I've pre-configured the hub. Private Home is typically a full day. Fort Knox can take 1–2 days depending on the network audit scope. You'll know up front.

What if something breaks later?

You can call or text me directly. If it's something I can fix remotely (via the Tailscale tunnel if you opted in), I will. Otherwise I'll come back out. Most customers add the Home Lab Care Plan at $79/month for ongoing updates and priority support.

Is this overkill if I just want smart lights?

Honestly, maybe. If you want three smart bulbs and nothing else, just buy Hue and be done. The setup I install makes sense if (a) you care about privacy, (b) you want more than five connected devices, or (c) you want them to actually talk to each other reliably. Those three together are where local-first wins.
